Kompas schematic of restricted roads around Dubrovnik Old Town: Ilijina glavica, Pile, Ploče, Boninovo and Viktorija.

A rental car opens up the Dubrovnik coast, but approaching the Old Town takes a little planning. Hiring a car does not give you permission to enter the restricted traffic zone. Decide where you will park and confirm access for your vehicle before setting off.

When do the restrictions apply?

The regular operating period in 2026 is 1 April to 31 October. The City Council changed the previous March–November period on 26 February 2026. Restrictions may also be activated outside the regular season for special events or increased traffic. Follow current signs and City announcements.

Where can you not drive without authorised access?

The controlled area starts before you reach the city walls. It covers approaches from Ilijina glavica along Zagrebačka towards Viktorija, and the Pile–Boninovo side of the Old Town. Roads include Kralja Petra Krešimira IV., Frana Supila, Iza Grada, Branitelja Dubrovnika and Brsalje, with adjoining streets. Watch for the controls near the public garage at Ilijina glavica.

Our Kompas graphic shows the main restricted roads. It is a schematic, not a navigation map or a complete boundary map. Use the official map linked below for further detail. A route suggested by your navigation app does not establish permission to enter.

How can visitors arrange access?

Accommodation in the zone: ask your hotel or host to confirm whether they can arrange vehicle access and parking where required. Send the actual rental car registration number after collection and ask them to confirm it has been entered in the system. An apartment reservation alone is not sufficient. Official guidance allows certain accommodation registrations within three days of arrival; this is not a general grace period for driving around or looking for parking.

Pre-booked parking: the official system offers advance reservations at Pile and the Cable Car lower platform. Enter the correct number plate and follow the confirmed time slot. Check the official Sanitat parking reservation system.

No confirmed access: park outside the zone and continue on foot or by public transport. The public garage near Ilijina glavica is one option; check its approach, opening hours and rates before driving. Avoid setting Pile as your destination and hoping to find a parking space when you arrive.

What changed for rental cars in May 2026?

The decision adopted on 5 May 2026 requires rental vehicles to have regulated access status. Where the rental company submits the required information and proof that the hirer is a natural person within three days of receiving the City's notification, the decision sets a EUR 260 penalty for the rental company as a legal entity and EUR 30 for its responsible person. A sole trader faces EUR 260 in this situation. This exception does not apply when the vehicle is used for paid passenger transport.

This is not a universal EUR 260 cap on all costs, and it does not authorise an entry retrospectively. General penalty provisions apply if the conditions are not met. Any customer's obligations to the rental company depend on the circumstances and rental agreement. If you think you have entered by mistake, contact Kompas and your accommodation provider promptly; keep the time of entry and your confirmations.

Collecting at Dubrovnik Airport or in the city?

At our Dubrovnik Airport car rental office, have your accommodation address and agreed parking location ready before leaving. If your host can register your vehicle, send the number plate while you are still at collection.

If you rent a car in Dubrovnik city, follow the office address and collection instructions in your booking confirmation. Plan a visit to the Old Town separately from your drive to Cavtat, Konavle or the Pelješac peninsula: arrange parking for the city visit, then enjoy the onward journey.

Your before-you-drive checklist

1. Check whether your route enters the restricted zone.
2. Send your host the registration number of the car you actually collect.
3. Save the access confirmation or parking reservation.
4. Set navigation to your agreed parking or collection point.
5. Without confirmation, stop legally outside the zone and check before proceeding.
